That said, the role of the companion in the traditioanl sense is to get into trouble, have the Doctor explain the plot to her and to be a foil for the Doctor. If Donna serves this purpose, I'll be happier. What really got me about Rose is that the series for the first season should have been called Rose Who since it was rare the Doctor took an active role in solving the problem. Rose was the catalyst more often than not, which is fine on occasion, but when the season finale revolves around her saving the universe....no, that's the Doctor's role. It is, after all, his show.
That said, darkness in the character of the Doctor is nothing new. Troughton started it and every other Doctor since him has wanted to infuse his portrayal with that. Even Hartnell had it sort of, but Troughton really perfected it. McCoy was darker and more mysterious as well.
That's a matter of opinion. I loved Martha, but to me Tate has far more synchronicity with Tennant and the two characters seem to actually be on much closer wavelengths than Martha did.
Keep in mind that you are speaking from the perspective of a guy who has seen 29 series of the Doctor, and you're comparing every actress and every Companion to scores of others. I've seen many of the other incarnations of both characters, but I'm thinking in terms of the three Companions in the modern stories, as do most of the people watching the series at this point. And I think Donna fits the role better than any of them.
Rose always had family issues pulling at her, as did Martha in spades. It's already been established that Donna's only close personal connection is fully supportive of her journey, so all that crap's outta the way. Now Donna and the Doctor are off having adventures and she's proving to be his humanizing force and helpmate, not his adoring fanbase. I like that. They're obviously not equals because he's a freaking time lord, but she's also going to force him to not get caught up in all the crap that's happened previously, which Martha also never did.
And no, darkness in the Doctor is not new. The Eccelston series is proof of that. But I don't think they've really touched the depths that Tennant can go into, and I hope they take advantage of that before Tennant leaves, if he does. Torchwood shouldn't have all the angst in the Whoverse. :)
